Umlaut holds seed at Nationals

Umlaut attended the Australian Ultimate Championships over the Anzac Day long weekend and achieved moderate success, clocking up a few wins and holding seed.

Although the team had a win every day of play they failed to crack the top 12, then lost in a close and exciting game against Thunder in the 13/14 play off. Umlaut had beaten Thunder 15 - 9 on day two, but Thunder (the Australian under 19s representative team) had improved immensely throughout the tournament. Umlaut had a bad start, trailing 6 - 1 early and 8 - 4 at half, but pulled out all stops to be within 1 point for most of the second half. The juniors held out to take the game 15 - 12.

This is the third year of Umlaut's existence and the second year of Nationals, and each year has seen huge improvement. The team sent to Nationals this year was by far the best Umlaut team seen yet. Even between Regionals and Nats there was a vast improvement, which is a credit to the effort the players have put in.

We hope to see this trend continue and Umlaut emerge even stronger next season.

Umlaut is going to Nationals!

At Regionals Umlaut failed to cause any upsets, but held their ground to make seed. This initially was not enough, but with the North region not taking all their spots another became available for the East region. So Umlaut has scraped through as the seventh team from East, and the fourteenth seed overall.

East is likely to get at least one of the wildcard bids, but the competition for that last place at Nationals is still likely to be fierce.  Newcastle, Fyshwick United and the two Sydney Men's teams are likely to take up the first four spots.  It's not certain what other teams will be competing, but it's likely Umlaut will be jostling with Fakulti, Hills, Manly, and possibly others for the final place.

Umlaut Returns for 2010

Following our somewhat successful 2009 campaign, qualifying for Nationals in our second year, Umlaut will be back at Eastern regionals contending for a place at Nationals in Adelaide.  Training will be starting sometime early next year, on Wednesday nights at the Steel Park fields in Marrickville.

A proper plan is forthcoming, but we'll probably be having tryouts in January.

If you are interested in playing with Umlaut please email the captain wally@walradio.com.
